Battle of Britain 70th Anniversary

RAF Museum service, 11 & 12 September 2010

Hard on the heels of our Colindale Running Day based at the RAF Museum, the museum is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain with a weekend of free events.  To complement the events and to provide period transport from nearby stations, a free bus service will operate between Colindale Station and Mill Hill Broadway via the museum.

The bus service will operate every 20 minutes through the day (11 am to 5 pm)and can be boarded at Colindale Station (Northern Line Underground, bus stop outside to the left, same side of the road) and at Mill Hill Broadway Station (First Capital Connect trains, bus station stop D).  Departure times of the service are in printable form here.  The RAF Museum is 5 or 6 minutes from each station.  Note that there will be a break in the service on Sunday afternoon for the Battle of Britain flypast (Spitfire and Hurricane) at 1505 - weather dependent.

Not just enthusiasts! All buses planned for the service worked in London during the Battle of Britain in 1940.  Two were new earlier that year, built to the new design that was to become London's standard bus after the war, and one dates from 1934.  These buses are therefore at least 70 years old and are fragile; restrictions on passenger numbers may therefore apply.

Buses planned for service are STL441 (1934), RT8 (1940) and RT113 (1940).

STL441 proves popular at an earlier Red-RF event in 2008.
